Bus - Slang for motorcar
Down - In England, everyone who goes to London, whether they are north, south, east, or west of the city, goes "up to London". Hence, everyone who goes from London elsewhere is traveling "down to..."
Fancy Dress Ball - A party where everyone is expected to dress in costume
Fortnight - Two weeks
Hole-and-corner - Secret or underhand
Lighter - According to the OED, a boat, usually flat bottomed, for loading and unloading ships not brought to wharf
Motor - Used as a verb, it is to travel by car
Pierrot and Pierrette - French pantomime characters with whitened faces and loose white dress
Shingle - Small rounded pebbles lying on the seashore
