AUDITIONS
for

Rebecca

by Daphne duMaurier

Tuesday and Wednesday
November 12 & 13, 2002

7:00 pm at the Bear River Heritage Center, Petoskey

It's time to dust off your English accents an polish up your best 1930's manners.  Auditions for LTCT's production of Daphne duMaurier's "Rebecca" will be held on Tuesday, November 12 and Wednesday, November 13.  Because of the construction at the Arts Center, we will be using the Bear River Heritage Center at the corner of Charlevoix Avenue and Ingalls Avenue.  Director, Betsy Willis, asks that all interested parties arrive at the Heritage Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. to fill out the audition form and become acquainted with the script.  Readings will begin at 7:30.  Betsy will be using the script from the show for the audition process.

"Rebecca" is the name of the deceased first wife of Maxim deWinter.  Maxim is the heir to Manderley, a country estate in Cornwall, England.  Less than a year after Rebecca's mysterious death, Maxim travels to France and marries a young woman known to the audience only as Mrs. deWinter.  When they return to Manderley it becomes clear to the new Mrs. deWinter that the shadow of the beloved Rebecca looms large in everyone's mind, most especially the servants of Manderley.  No matter what this shy new wife does, she is compared to the gracious, exuberant, Rebecca.  Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, is especially attached to the former wife and turns a cold shoulder and a manipulative eye to the newcomer.  As the newlyweds host their first party things go from bad to worse when Rebecca's body is found and new questions are raised as to whether she died naturally or was murdered.  If all of this sounds familiar it is because the play is adapted from duMaurier's classic novel of the same name.

There are twelve speaking roles in the show, eight males and four females.  The men range in age from 18 to 70 and the women from 18 to 60.  Willis emphasizes that there are twelve speaking roles but many other opportunities for non-speaking actors to take a small role.  Her intention is to use backstage techies, dressed in servant's uniforms, to act as the household staff, and if there are enough interested and committed people, to have several people play the roles of guests arriving at the costume ball.  This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who has wanted to try his or her acting wings but has been unsure of the line memorization involved.

Scripts are available for perusal by visiting the temporary civic theatre office located in the lower level of Bank One in downtown Petoskey.  The office is open Monday through Friday from 10 to 5.  A $5.00 refundable deposit will be collected at the time the script is checked out.  Please call the office at 348-1850 for further information, or interested people may also call the director, Betsy Willis at 347-3399.
